Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground whitefish
  • 1 pound Ground pike
  • 1 large Onion
  • 1 medium Carrot
  • 4 large Eggs
  • 0.5 cup Matzo meal
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup Water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan lightly with vegetable oil or line with parchment paper.

Step 2

Using a food processor, finely chop the onion and carrot until smooth and no large pieces remain.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground whitefish, ground pike, chopped onion and carrot, eggs, matzo meal, sugar, salt, and black pepper.

Step 4

Mix the ingredients thoroughly until well combined. The mixture should be slightly sticky but hold together. Add a little more matzo meal if the mixture is too wet.

Step 5

Transfer the fish mixture to the prepared loaf pan, smoothing the top with a spatula or the back of a spoon.

Step 6

Pour the 0.5 cup of water evenly over the top of the loaf to help keep it moist while baking.

Step 7

Bake the gefilte fish loaf in the preheated oven for 60 minutes, or until the top is firm and lightly golden.

Step 8

Remove the loaf from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 15 minutes before transferring it to a serving platter.

Step 9

Slice the gefilte fish loaf into even portions and serve chilled or at room temperature with horseradish or a dollop of beet relish on the side.
