Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons parsley (chopped)
  • 0.5 cup parmesan cheese (grated)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.

Step 2

Add the warm water, milk, and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

Step 3

Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.

Step 4

Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 5

While the dough rises, prepare the garlic butter filling. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, and grated parmesan cheese until combined.

Step 6

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 7

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a 12x16-inch rectangle on a floured surface.

Step 8

Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.

Step 9

Starting from one of the long sides, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Pinch the seam to seal.

Step 10

Cut the log into 12 equal slices using a sharp knife or dental floss.

Step 11

Place the spirals on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart. Cover with a towel and let them rise for 20 minutes.

Step 12

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the spirals with the egg wash for a golden finish.

Step 13

Bake in the preheated oven for 22-25 minutes, or until the spirals are golden brown and fragrant.

Step 14

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm as a side dish or snack!
