Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.75 cup Whole milk
  • 6 tablespoons Unsalted butter (melted, divided)
  • 1 large Egg
  • 4 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh thyme (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh rosemary (chopped)
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese (grated)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt. Mix well to combine.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, warm the milk over low heat until lukewarm (not hot). Add 4 tablespoons of melted butter into the milk, then whisk in the egg.

Step 3

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and knead the dough by hand or with a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 4

Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rest in a warm area for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Step 5

While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a small bowl, combine the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter, garlic, parsley, thyme, rosemary, and Parmesan cheese. Mix well and set aside.

Step 6

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a large rectangle, approximately 12 inches by 15 inches.

Step 7

Spread the garlic herb butter mixture evenly over the dough rectangle.

Step 8

Cut the dough into strips about 3 inches wide. Stack the strips on top of each other, then cut the stacked strips into 3-inch squares.

Step 9

Carefully place the squares of dough upright into a greased loaf pan, filling it loosely to allow for expansion.

Step 10

Cover the loaf pan with a towel and let the dough rise for another 30 minutes, until slightly puffed.

Step 11

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) during the second rise.

Step 12

Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Step 13

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack.

Step 14

Serve warm, pulling apart pieces of the bread to enjoy the layers of garlic and herb goodness.
