Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 medium, finely diced Yellow onion
  • 0.5 seeded and diced Green bell pepper
  • 2 minced Garlic cloves
  • 0.75 cup Ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 0.5 cup Beef broth
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 4 Burger buns
  • 2 tablespoons (optional, for toasting buns) Butter

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5-6 minutes, breaking it into smaller crumbles with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess grease from the skillet and set cooked beef aside.

Step 2

Reduce the heat to medium. In the same skillet, add the diced onion and green bell pepper. Sauté for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3

Return the cooked beef to the skillet. Stir in ketchup, yellow mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, and beef broth. Mix well until the ingredients are fully incorporated.

Step 4

Season the mixture with salt and black pepper. Let the Sloppy Joes simmer on low heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 5

While the mixture simmers, optionally toast the burger buns. Spread a small amount of butter on the inside of each bun and toast on a skillet over medium heat, cut-side down, until golden brown.

Step 6

Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with the remaining bun halves and serve warm.

Step 7

Optional: Serve with a side of coleslaw, potato chips, or pickles for a complete meal.
