Ingredients

  • 300 g Ground beef or thinly sliced beef
  • 1 cup Thai basil leaves
  • 3 Garlic cloves
  • 2 Red Thai chilies
  • 2 tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp Fish sauce
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 2 cups Steamed jasmine rice (for serving)
  • 2 Eggs (optional, for frying)

Directions

Step 1

Prepare the garlic and chilies by finely chopping or pounding them together in a mortar and pestle to release their oils. Set this mixture aside.

Step 2

Rinse the Thai basil leaves and set them aside to drain.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and set the sauce mixture aside.

Step 4

Heat a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil. Swirl the oil to coat the pan.

Step 5

Add the garlic and chili mixture to the hot oil and stir-fry for 30 seconds, or until fragrant.

Step 6

Increase the heat slightly and add the ground or sliced beef to the pan. Stir-fry the beef, breaking up any large pieces with a spatula, until it is fully cooked and brown (about 3–4 minutes).

Step 7

Pour the prepared sauce mixture over the beef and toss to evenly coat. Stir-fry for another 1–2 minutes, ensuring the flavors blend well.

Step 8

Add the Thai basil leaves to the pan and toss everything together for about 30 seconds, just until the basil wilts and becomes fragrant. Remove the pan from the heat immediately to avoid overcooking the basil.

Step 9

Serve the stir-fried beef hot over steamed jasmine rice. Optionally, top each serving with a fried egg for an authentic Thai experience.
