Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.33 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder (divided)
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.75 cup Packed brown sugar
  • 1.5 cups Hot water

Directions

Step 1

Lightly grease the insert of your slow cooker to prevent sticking.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of the cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture and stir until a smooth batter forms.

Step 4

Spread the batter evenly in the bottom of the slow cooker.

Step 5

In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and remaining cocoa powder (about 3 tablespoons). Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the slow cooker.

Step 6

Pour the hot water over the top of the batter and sugar mixture, but do not stir. The water will create a sauce as the cake bakes.

Step 7

Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on high for 2 hours, or until the top of the cake is set but still slightly gooey and the sauce is bubbly.

Step 8

Turn off the slow cooker and let the cake cool for 10–15 minutes before serving. This will allow the sauce to thicken slightly.

Step 9

Serve warm, spooned into bowls with a drizzle of the chocolate sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
