Ingredients

  • 16 ounces Mozzarella block
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 3 units Eggs
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 2 cups Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 0.5 cup Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 28 ounces Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 small Onion (finely chopped)
  • 3 units Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon Red pepper flakes (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Cut the mozzarella block into 12 rectangular wedges. Place them on a baking sheet and freeze for 1 hour.

Step 2

Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls. In the first bowl, add flour. In the second bowl, beat eggs with milk. In the third bowl, combine breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.

Step 3

Coat each mozzarella wedge in flour, then dip it into the egg mixture, and finally coat it in the breadcrumb mixture. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating to double-bread each wedge for extra crispiness. Place the breaded wedges back in the freezer for at least 30 minutes while preparing the marinara sauce.

Step 4

To make the marinara sauce, heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, basil, oregano, sugar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning as needed and keep warm.

Step 6

Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully fry the mozzarella wedges in batches for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pot.

Step 7

Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried mozzarella wedges to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Step 8

Serve the fried mozzarella wedges hot with the warm homemade marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
