Ingredients

  • 400 grams firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 pieces garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 2 stalks green onion, chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Drain the tofu and press it gently between paper towels to remove excess moisture. Cut it into 1-inch cubes.

Step 2

In a shallow bowl, toss the tofu cubes with cornstarch until they are evenly coated.

Step 3

Heat a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil and swirl to coat the pan.

Step 4

Fry the tofu cubes in a single layer, without overcrowding, for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and crispy. Remove the fried tofu and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels.

Step 5

In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Sauté the minced garlic and grated ginger for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 6

Stir in soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sesame oil, and brown sugar. Stir well to combine, cooking for 1 minute until the sauce slightly thickens.

Step 7

Optional: Add chili flakes for a bit of heat.

Step 8

Return the fried tofu to the skillet and toss gently to coat the tofu evenly with the sauce.

Step 9

Cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the tofu to absorb the sauce while maintaining its crispiness.

Step 10

Transfer to a serving plate, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve immediately while warm.
