Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 units garlic cloves, minced
  • 500 grams ground beef or lamb
  • 2 units white bread slices
  • 250 milliliters milk
  • 2 tablespoons chutney
  • 50 grams raisins
  • 50 grams almonds, slivered
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 units bay leaves
  • 2 units eggs

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Step 3

Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 4

While the meat is cooking, soak the slices of bread in 125 milliliters of milk (half the quantity). Once softened, squeeze out the excess milk and crumble the bread into small pieces. Save the remaining milk to use later.

Step 5

Mix the crumbled bread into the cooked meat mixture, followed by chutney, raisins, slivered almonds, curry powder, ground turmeric, salt, ground black pepper, and lemon juice. Stir everything together and let the flavors meld for 2-3 minutes on low heat.

Step 6

Transfer the meat mixture into a greased ovenproof dish, spreading it out evenly. Nestle the bay leaves into the mixture.

Step 7

In a small bowl, whisk the eggs with the remaining 125 milliliters of milk. Pour this egg mixture over the meat in the dish, ensuring it coats the surface evenly.

Step 8

Bake the bobotie in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until the egg topping is set and golden brown.

Step 9

Remove the dish from the oven, discard the bay leaves, and let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Step 10

Serve Fran's Prizewinning Bobotie warm with a side of yellow rice and chutney for a truly authentic experience.
