Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large, diced onion
  • 3 minced garlic cloves
  • 500 grams ground beef (mince)
  • 2 medium, diced carrot
  • 2 diced celery stalks
  • 150 grams frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 400 grams (1 can) diced tomatoes
  • 250 milliliters beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 kilogram (peeled and diced) potatoes
  • 50 grams butter
  • 100 milliliters milk
  • 100 grams, grated cheddar cheese

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan or gas mark 6).

Step 2

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté the diced onion and minced garlic until softened and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 3

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned, approximately 8-10 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the diced carrots and celery, cooking for another 5 minutes until they begin to soften.

Step 5

Mix in the frozen peas, tomato paste, canned diced tomatoes, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Let the mixture simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened.

Step 6

While the filling is simmering, cook the potatoes in a large saucepan of boiling salted water until tender, about 10-12 minutes.

Step 7

Drain the potatoes and mash them with butter and milk until smooth. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.

Step 8

Spread the beef and vegetable mixture evenly in a large baking dish. Top with the mashed potatoes, spreading it out into an even layer. Use a fork to create textured ridges on the surface of the potatoes.

Step 9

Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese evenly over the mashed potatoes.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.

Step 11

Remove the mince tray from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy Francie’s Tasty Mince Tray with a fresh green salad or crusty bread.
