Ingredients

  • 240 ml Whole milk
  • 56 g Unsalted butter
  • 50 g Granulated sugar
  • 7 g Active dry yeast
  • 60 ml Warm water (about 43°C/110°F)
  • 400 g All-purpose flour
  • 5 g Salt
  • 1 large Eggs
  • 20 g Melted butter (for brushing, optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to steam but not boil. Remove from heat and add the butter and sugar, stirring until the butter is fully melted. Allow to cool to lukewarm (about 43°C/110°F).

Step 2

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Stir lightly and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy. This indicates the yeast is active.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm milk mixture, the yeast mixture, and the beaten egg. Stir until well combined.

Step 4

Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing with a wooden spoon or a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, until a soft dough forms.

Step 5

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes (or 5 minutes with the stand mixer) until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.

Step 7

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball by tucking the edges under and rolling it gently in your hands.

Step 8

Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish or on a parchment-lined baking sheet, slightly spaced apart if you prefer crustier sides.

Step 9

Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise again in a warm place for 30-40 minutes, or until puffy.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).

Step 11

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until golden brown on top. If they brown too quickly, loosely cover with aluminum foil after the first 10 minutes.

Step 12

Remove the rolls from the oven and optionally brush them with melted butter for an extra-soft and glossy finish.

Step 13

Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
