Ingredients

  • 3 large Russet potatoes
  • 2 cups Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1.5 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Butter
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with the tablespoon of butter and set aside.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin, even slices (about 1/8 inch thick) using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife. Place the slices in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning while preparing the sauce.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, combine heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, fresh thyme, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Heat over medium-low heat until the mixture is warm and fragrant, stirring occasionally. Do not let it boil.

Step 4

Drain the potato slices and pat them dry. Layer one-third of the potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish.

Step 5

Sprinkle one-third of the shredded Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses over the potato layer.

Step 6

Pour one-third of the warm cream mixture over the top. Repeat the layering process two more times with the remaining potatoes, cheeses, and cream mixture, ensuring the final layer is cream and cheese.

Step 7

Cover the baking dish with foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 40 minutes, then remove the foil and continue baking for another 20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Step 8

Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional thyme leaves if desired.
