Ingredients

  • 300 grams pickled herring fillets
  • 500 grams new potatoes
  • 4 large hard-boiled eggs
  • 1 medium red onion
  • 3 small dill pickles
  • 200 ml sour cream
  • 20 grams fresh dill
  • 2 stalks scallions
  • 1 medium lemon
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt

Directions

Step 1

Boil the new potatoes in salted water for about 10-15 minutes or until tender. Drain and let them cool to room temperature. Once cool, slice them into 1 cm thick rounds.

Step 2

While the potatoes are cooking, hard-boil the eggs for 9-10 minutes. Once done, plunge them into an ice bath, peel, and slice them into thin rounds.

Step 3

Slice the pickled herring fillets into bite-sized pieces. Set aside.

Step 4

Finely chop the red onion and dill pickles. Thinly slice the scallions and roughly chop the fresh dill.

Step 5

In a small bowl, mix the sour cream with the juice of half a lemon, black pepper, and salt. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Step 6

In a serving dish (ideally glass to showcase the layers), start layering the ingredients. Begin with a layer of sliced potatoes, followed by pickled herring, red onion, and dill pickles. Add a layer of sour cream sauce and top with sliced eggs.

Step 7

Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used up, finishing with a layer of eggs and a drizzle of sour cream sauce on top.

Step 8

Garnish with fresh dill, thinly sliced scallions, and a few lemon wedges for presentation.

Step 9

Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving to let the flavors meld. Serve cold as an appetizer or light main dish.
