Peel the rutabagas, then cut them into 1/2-inch cubes. Rinse them under cold water and set them aside.
In a large, heavy skillet or sauté pan, melt the butter over medium heat until it starts to foam.
Add the diced rutabagas to the skillet. Stir to coat them in the melted butter.
Sprinkle the sugar over the rutabagas. Stir frequently to ensure the sugar distributes evenly and begin to caramelize slightly.
Season the rutabagas with salt and black pepper. Stir again to evenly coat.
