Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons Ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.75 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.75 cup Brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup Molasses
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar
  • 2 large Egg whites
  • 1 variety (e.g., gumdrops, sprinkles, mini marshmallows) Decorative candies

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Step 4

Mix in the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms. Divide the dough into two portions, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Step 6

On a floured surface, roll out one portion of dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Using a stencil or freehand, cut shapes for the gingerbread house: 2 rectangles for the roof, 2 rectangles for the side walls, and 2 pieces for the front and back (cut one of the front pieces into a triangle at the top for the roof line). Reroll scraps as needed.

Step 7

Place the cut shapes onto the prepared baking sheets and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until edges are firm. Allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.

Step 8

To make royal icing, beat powdered sugar and egg whites together in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Transfer the icing to a piping bag for assembly and decoration.

Step 9

Use the royal icing to “glue” the gingerbread pieces together, starting with the walls and adding the roof once the base is stable. Allow the icing to dry between steps to ensure the house is sturdy.

Step 10

Let the toddlers decorate the house with the icing and a variety of candies. Encourage creativity and make it a fun family activity!

Step 11

Once decorated, allow the house to dry completely before displaying or enjoying.
