Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 6–8 minutes.

Step 2

Drain any excess fat from the skillet and return the skillet to the stove.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the cooked beef and sauté until softened, about 4–5 minutes.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium, then stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.

Step 5

Allow the mixture to simmer for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors meld together.

Step 6

While the meat mixture is simmering, lightly butter the insides of the hamburger buns. Toast them in a clean skillet or on a griddle over medium heat until golden brown, about 1–2 minutes.

Step 7

Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture generously onto the bottom half of each toasted bun, spreading evenly.

Step 8

Top with the other half of the bun and serve warm. Enjoy your Family Favorite Sloppy Joes with a side of chips, salad, or pickles!
