Ingredients

  • 4 medium yams (peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rounds)
  • 3 medium apples (firm, peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/4-inch slices)
  • 4 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 0.33 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup pecans (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.33 cup heavy cream or milk

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with a small amount of butter or non-stick cooking spray.

Step 3

Layer the yam slices in the bottom of the prepared casserole dish, slightly overlapping them. Add a layer of apple slices on top of the yams. Repeat with alternating layers until all the yams and apples are used up.

Step 4

In a small mixing bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the melted butter, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Stir until the mixture forms a paste.

Step 5

Drizzle the butter-sugar mixture evenly over the layered yams and apples.

Step 6

In another small bowl, mix the chopped pecans, flour, and the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Use a fork to create a crumbly mixture, and sprinkle it evenly over the casserole.

Step 7

Pour the heavy cream or milk evenly over the top of the casserole to add moisture and richness.

Step 8

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 9

After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.

Step 10

Allow the casserole to cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm as a side dish or a comforting dessert.
