Ingredients

  • 6 medium Russet potatoes
  • 2 cups Cooked ham
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 3 cups Whole milk
  • 2 cups Sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Paprika
  • 2 tablespoons Parsley (chopped, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin, even rounds, about 1/8-inch thick. Set aside in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

Step 3

Dice the cooked ham into bite-sized cubes and set it aside.

Step 4

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.

Step 5

Gradually add the milk to the roux while whisking continuously to ensure a smooth mixture. Continue whisking until the sauce thickens, 5-7 minutes.

Step 6

Stir in the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. Reduce heat to low and mix in the shredded cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth. Remove from heat.

Step 7

Drain the potato slices and pat them dry with a clean towel.

Step 8

Layer one-third of the potato slices evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle one-third of the diced ham over the potatoes and pour one-third of the cheese sauce over the layer.

Step 9

Repeat the layering process two more times, finishing with a generous layer of cheese sauce on the top.

Step 10

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes.

Step 11

Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30-40 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

Step 12

Let the scalloped potatoes and ham rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley for a fresh finish.

Step 13

Serve warm and enjoy this hearty, flavorful dish!
