Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 0.5 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz canned tomato paste
  • 15 oz canned tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 4 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, and diced onion until the meat is browned and the onion is tender, about 7-10 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another 1-2 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce. Add the sugar, dried basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix well. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

While the sauce simmers, prepare the ricotta mixture. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan, and 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley. Mix until well combined and set aside.

Step 5

Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions, then drain and rinse them under cold water to prevent sticking. Lay the noodles flat on a clean surface.

Step 6

In a 9x13-inch baking dish, spread 1 cup of the prepared meat sauce on the bottom. Arrange 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella on top. Repeat the layers (sauce, noodles, ricotta, mozzarella) twice more, finishing with a layer of meat sauce on top.

Step 7

Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese over the final meat sauce layer. Cover the dish with aluminum foil, making sure the foil does not touch the cheese.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 9

Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Step 10

Garnish with the remaining 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley and enjoy!
