Ingredients

  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cups Warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 0.5 cups Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cups Shortening
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cups Boiling water
  • 1 large Beaten egg
  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (melted, for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until bubbly and frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar, shortening, and salt. Carefully pour the boiling water over the mixture and stir until the shortening melts completely. Let it cool to lukewarm temperature.

Step 3

Stir in the beaten egg and the prepared yeast mixture.

Step 4

Gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

Step 5

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and refrigerate the dough for at least 4 hours or overnight. The dough can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Step 6

When ready to bake, remove the dough from the refrigerator and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish or on a greased baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart.

Step 7

Cover the rolls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise in a warm place for about 1 to 2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 8

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 9

Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 10

Immediately after removing the rolls from the oven, brush the tops with melted butter for a soft and shiny finish.

Step 11

Serve warm and enjoy!
