Ingredients

  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 whole bay leaf
  • 2 whole cardamom pods
  • 2 whole clove
  • 1 quarter piece cinnamon stick
  • 1 tablespoon optional garnish: chopped cilantro or toasted slivered almonds

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the jasmine rice under cold water in a fine mesh sieve until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps to keep the grains separate.

Step 2

In a medium-sized saucepan, add the water, unsalted butter, and salt. Stir to combine.

Step 3

Gently crush the cardamom pods with the back of a knife to release their flavor, but keep them mostly intact. Add the cardamom pods, bay leaf, cloves, and cinnamon stick to the saucepan.

Step 4

Bring the water to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.

Step 5

Once the water is boiling, add the rinsed jasmine rice to the saucepan. Stir to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer for 12–15 minutes. Avoid opening the lid during this time to retain the steam and ensure even cooking.

Step 7

After 15 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. This allows the grains to fully absorb the flavors and any remaining steam to escape.

Step 8

Carefully remove the bay leaf, cardamom pods, cloves, and cinnamon stick from the rice before serving.

Step 9

Fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains. If desired, garnish with chopped cilantro or toasted slivered almonds for added texture and visual appeal.

Step 10

Serve warm as a fragrant side dish or as the foundation for your favorite curry, stir-fry, or grilled protein.
