Ingredients

  • 1 cup Active sourdough starter
  • 0.75 cup Warm water
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Honey
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 2.5 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup Bread flour
  • 1 teaspoon Instant yeast (optional, for faster rise)

Directions

Step 1

Ensure your sourdough starter is active and bubbly before starting.

Step 2

Add the ingredients to your bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Typically, wet ingredients (sourdough starter, water, olive oil, and honey) are added first, followed by dry ingredients (salt, whole wheat flour, bread flour, and yeast, if using).

Step 3

Place the bread machine pan into the machine and select the 'Basic' or 'Whole Wheat' cycle, depending on your machine. If using the yeast-free sourdough method, choose the cycle with the longest rise time, such as the 'Dough' cycle, and bake separately using the 'Bake' function if needed.

Step 4

Start the machine and allow it to mix, knead, and rise the dough. Monitor the dough during mixing; if it is too sticky, add a tablespoon of bread flour at a time, or if it’s too dry, add a teaspoon of water.

Step 5

When the baking cycle is complete, carefully remove the bread pan from the machine, and turn the bread out onto a cooling rack. Let it cool completely before slicing to allow flavors to develop and the crumb to set properly.

Step 6

Serve the bread warm or at room temperature, plain or with butter, jam, or any topping of your choice. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
