Preheat your sandwich press or a non-stick frying pan over medium heat.
Butter one side of each slice of bread evenly.
Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on a clean surface or directly on the sandwich press/pan.
Layer the cheese evenly on the bread. If using optional ingredients, add ham, tomato slices, a pinch of salt, and black pepper on top of the cheese.
Cover with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
If using a sandwich press, close the lid and cook for 3–5 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted. If using a frying pan, cook on one side for 2–3 minutes. Gently flip and cook the other side for another 2–3 minutes.
Remove the toastie from the press/pan and let it cool for 1–2 minutes before slicing in half.
