Ingredients

  • 3 pounds Beef brisket
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 cup Beef broth
  • 14.5 ounces Diced tomatoes (canned)
  • 4 ounces Green chiles (canned, diced)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).

Step 2

In a small bowl, mix together the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cumin, and smoked paprika.

Step 3

Pat the brisket dry with paper towels, then rub the spice mixture generously all over the brisket.

Step 4

Heat the olive oil in a large oven-safe Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat.

Step 5

Sear the brisket on both sides for 3–4 minutes per side until a brown crust forms. Remove the brisket and set aside.

Step 6

In the same pot, add the beef broth, canned diced tomatoes, and green chiles. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.

Step 7

Return the brisket to the pot, making sure it is mostly submerged in the liquid. Cover the pot with a lid or foil.

Step 8

Place the pot in the preheated oven and cook for 5–6 hours, or until the brisket is fork-tender.

Step 9

Carefully remove the pot from the oven and let the brisket rest in the liquid for 15–20 minutes.

Step 10

Shred the brisket with two forks, discarding any excess fat, and mix it with the cooking liquid to coat.

Step 11

Serve the shredded brisket with warm tortillas, over rice, or with your favorite Tex-Mex sides. Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired.
