Ingredients

  • 10 cups day-old bread (cubed or torn into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 cup celery (finely chopped)
  • 2.5 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Prepare the bread: If your bread is not already stale, spread it on baking sheets and let it dry out at room temperature overnight, or bake it in a 250°F (120°C) oven for 20-30 minutes, tossing occasionally.

Step 2

In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, and sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until softened.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the dried bread cubes, sautéed onion and celery, chicken or vegetable broth, beaten eggs, sage, thyme, parsley, salt, and pepper. Stir gently until the ingredients are evenly combined and the bread is moistened but not soggy. Adjust the broth quantity if needed.

Step 4

Grease the inside of your crock pot with nonstick cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking.

Step 5

Transfer the stuffing mixture into the crock pot and spread it in an even layer.

Step 6

Cover the crock pot and cook on LOW for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.

Step 7

Check the stuffing after 3 hours. It should be moist and cooked through. If it seems dry, add a little more broth and stir gently.

Step 8

Once cooked, switch the crock pot to the WARM setting until ready to serve.
