Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons Butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 0.5 cups Heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoons Onion powder
  • 1 cup Cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh thyme or parsley (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

Step 2

Wash, peel, and thinly slice the potatoes into approximately 1/8-inch thick rounds. Use a mandoline for even slices if available.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a roux.

Step 4

Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream until smooth. Bring to a gentle simmer, allowing the sauce to thicken, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and onion powder. If using cheese, mix in half of the optional cheddar cheese and stir until melted.

Step 6

Layer half of the potato slices evenly in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the creamy sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.

Step 7

Arrange the remaining potato slices on top, followed by the rest of the sauce. If using cheese, sprinkle the remaining cheddar over the top.

Step 8

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes.

Step 9

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30-40 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

Step 10

Let the dish cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh thyme or parsley, if desired.
