Ingredients

  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper
  • 4 cups water

Directions

Step 1

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 2

Add the broccoli florets to the boiling water and blanch for 3-4 minutes, or until just tender but still bright green.

Step 3

Drain the broccoli and set it aside.

Step 4

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 5

Once the butter has melted, add the flour and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes to form a roux. The flour should be lightly golden but not browned.

Step 6

Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 7

Lower the heat to medium-low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

Step 8

Add the garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to the cheese sauce, stirring to combine.

Step 9

Add the blanched broccoli to the cheese sauce and gently toss to coat the florets evenly.

Step 10

Serve warm as a side dish and enjoy!
