Indulge in the rustic charm of Dutch Appeltaart (Apple Pie)—a classic Dutch dessert that’s as beautiful as it is delicious. This authentic recipe features a buttery, tender crust wrapped around a spiced apple and raisin filling, bursting with warm cinnamon and zesty lemon juice. Unlike traditional American apple pies, a Dutch appeltaart boasts a thicker, biscuit-like crust and a distinctive lattice top that’s irresistibly golden and flaky. A sprinkle of breadcrumbs beneath the filling ensures a perfectly balanced texture by soaking up the luscious apple juices. Perfect for holidays, gatherings, or simply treating yourself, this appeltaart is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Its combination of sweet, tart, and buttery flavors makes it a must-try dessert that everyone will love!

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a 9-inch springform pan.
In a large bowl, mix together 300g of all-purpose flour, 175g of sugar, and a pinch of salt.
Cut 175g of cold unsalted butter into small cubes and mix it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers, until it resembles breadcrumbs.
Add one beaten egg and 2 teaspoons of cold water. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough lightly until smooth, wrap in cling film, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Peel, core, and thinly slice 6 apples. Place the apple slices in a bowl and toss them with 75g of raisins, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon.
Remove the dough from the fridge. Roll out two-thirds of the dough on a floured surface to fit the bottom and sides of the springform pan, with a little overhang.
Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of breadcrumbs evenly over the crust base. This will absorb some of the apple juices.
Fill the crust with the apple mixture, carefully mounding it slightly in the center.
Roll out the remaining dough and cut into strips. Create a lattice pattern over the top of the apples.
Beat another egg for the egg wash and brush it over the lattice crust.
Trim and crimp the edges of the pie.
Bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Allow the appeltaart to cool slightly in the pan before removing and serving.
Enjoy your delicious homemade Dutch appeltaart with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
