Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (or ground turkey for a leaner option)
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 cup Tomato sauce
  • 0.333 cup Ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black pepper
  • 6 Sandwich rolls or hamburger buns

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.

Step 3

Push the beef to one side of the skillet. In the empty space, add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the tomato paste to the skillet and stir it into the meat and vegetable mixture. Cook for 1 minute to develop the flavor.

Step 6

Pour in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Stir to combine.

Step 7

Add the brown sugar, paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the meat.

Step 8

Taste the mixture and adjust seasonings as needed.

Step 9

Toast the sandwich rolls or hamburger buns, if desired.

Step 10

Serve the sloppy joe mixture on the buns and enjoy immediately.
