Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 medium bell peppers, diced (red and green)
  • 1 medium jalapeño, finely chopped
  • 28 ounces canned diced tomatoes (with juice)
  • 15 ounces canned kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 15 ounces canned black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0 tortilla chips or cornbread (optional, for serving)
  • 0 sour cream (optional, for garnish)
  • 0 shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for garnish)
  • 0 chopped fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef and ground pork, cooking until browned and fully cooked. Break the meat into small crumbles with a spoon. Remove from the pot and set aside.

Step 3

In the same pot, add the diced onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic, bell peppers, and jalapeño, cooking for another 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 5

Return the cooked meat to the pot and mix well with the vegetables.

Step 6

Stir in the canned diced tomatoes (with juice), kidney beans, black beans, beef broth, and tomato paste. Mix until combined.

Step 7

Add chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, cocoa powder, dried oregano, ground cinnamon, salt, and black pepper. Stir thoroughly to evenly distribute the spices.

Step 8

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 60-75 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Allow the flavors to meld and the chili to thicken.

Step 9

Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt or spices if needed.

Step 10

Serve hot, garnished with sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and chopped cilantro, if desired. Pair with tortilla chips or cornbread for a complete meal.
