Ingredients

  • 4 cups canned navy beans
  • 6 slices bacon, diced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Drain and rinse the canned navy beans and set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the rendered bacon fat in the skillet.

Step 4

Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet and sauté in the bacon fat until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for an additional 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 6

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, and water. Stir until well mixed.

Step 7

Add the sautéed vegetables, crispy bacon, and drained navy beans to the bowl with the sauce. Stir to coat everything evenly.

Step 8

Transfer the bean mixture to a large baking dish or casserole dish.

Step 9

Bake the beans in the preheated oven, uncovered, for 1½ hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 10

Remove the dish from the oven and let the beans rest for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm as a side dish for barbecue or grilled meats.
