Ingredients

  • 2 pieces store-bought or homemade pie crusts
  • 500 grams ground beef or turkey
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrot, diced
  • 2 stalks celery stalks, diced
  • 150 grams frozen peas
  • 2 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 240 milliliters beef or chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat the butter or olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for 5–7 minutes or until the vegetables have softened.

Step 3

Add the garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the ground beef or turkey, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 5–7 minutes.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the meat mixture and stir well to coat everything evenly. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 6

Slowly pour in the broth while stirring, then add the tomato paste, soy sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix until the ingredients are well combined, and simmer the mixture for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the filling has thickened.

Step 7

Stir in the frozen peas and remove the skillet from heat. Let the filling cool slightly before assembling the pie.

Step 8

Place one pie crust into a 9-inch (23 cm) pie dish, pressing it gently into the bottom and sides. Trim any overhanging edges.

Step 9

Pour the prepared filling into the pie crust and spread it out evenly.

Step 10

Cover the filling with the second pie crust. Seal the edges by crimping them with a fork or your fingers. Trim any excess dough.

Step 11

Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.

Step 12

Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg for a golden, glossy finish.

Step 13

Bake the dinner pie in the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

Step 14

Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
