Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1.5 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet or saucepan, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up into small crumbles as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.

Step 2

Add the finely diced onion to the skillet with the beef and cook for 3-5 minutes, until the onion becomes translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute, being careful not to let it burn.

Step 4

Add the tomato paste to the mixture and stir well to coat the beef and onions evenly.

Step 5

Pour in the water, yellow mustard, ketchup, and white vinegar. Stir until well combined.

Step 6

Add the brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir everything together thoroughly.

Step 7

Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 8

If desired, add the hot sauce for a bit of heat and stir well.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water to loosen it up to your desired consistency.

Step 10

Serve the Coney sauce warm over grilled hot dogs, fries, or burgers. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
