Ingredients

  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup Warm water
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Warm milk
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter, melted
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 pieces Large eggs
  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 cup Unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar, warm milk, melted butter, and salt. Mix until the sugar dissolves.

Step 3

Add the eggs to the mixture and beat until well incorporated.

Step 4

Stir in the yeast mixture, then gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until a soft dough forms.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 7

Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan. Punch down the dough and press it evenly into the pan.

Step 8

Cover the pan with the kitchen towel and let the dough rise again for 30 minutes.

Step 9

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 10

Using your fingers, make dimples all across the surface of the risen dough.

Step 11

In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the dough.

Step 12

Dot the surface with small cubes of butter, pressing them lightly into the dough.

Step 13

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cake is cooked through.

Step 14

Allow the Moravian Sugar Cake to cool slightly in the pan before slicing and serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
