Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cups Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cups Unsalted butter
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 cups Buttermilk
  • 1 cups Hot water
  • 0.25 cups Vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. You can also line the bottoms with parchment paper for easier removal.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Add the eggs, one at a time, to the butter-sugar mixture, beating well after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

Reduce the mixer speed to low and gradually add the flour mixture in three batches, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined after each addition.

Step 6

Add the vegetable oil to the batter and mix gently to ensure a moist cake. Finally, stir in the hot water until fully incorporated. The batter will be thin, but that’s normal.

Step 7

Evenly divide the batter between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.

Step 8

Bake the cakes in the preheated oven for 28-32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in their pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Step 10

Once fully cooled, frost with your favorite chocolate frosting or ganache, and serve!
