Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup heavy cream
  • 1.5 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, then set them aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed using a hand or stand mixer until smooth.

Step 4

Slowly pour in the boiling water, mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

Step 5

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Tap the pans gently on the counter to release any air bubbles.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 7

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 8

Meanwhile, prepare the frosting. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and heavy cream together until just combined.

Step 9

Remove from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.

Step 10

Whisk in the powdered sugar until the frosting is thick and glossy. Let it cool slightly to thicken further.

Step 11

Once the cakes are completely cool, spread a layer of frosting on top of one cake layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake evenly.

Step 12

Decorate as desired and let the cake sit for about 30 minutes to allow the frosting to set. Slice and serve!
