Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.33 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons fine sea salt
  • 0.5 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cups dark chocolate chips
  • 0.5 cups brown sugar
  • 1.25 cups hot water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

Step 2

In a medium microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter in the microwave in 15-second increments until completely melted. Let it cool slightly.

Step 3

Whisk the granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder into the melted butter until smooth.

Step 4

In a separate medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Stir until combined into a smooth, thick batter.

Step 6

Mix in the vanilla extract and fold the dark chocolate chips into the batter using a rubber spatula.

Step 7

Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.

Step 8

In a small bowl, combine the remaining cocoa powder (about 4 tablespoons) and brown sugar. Sprinkle this dry mixture evenly over the batter in the baking dish.

Step 9

Pour the hot water gently over the surface of the dish. Do not stir; this is the key to creating the pudding layer as it bakes.

Step 10

Place the dish into the preheated oven and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the top of the dessert is firm and cracked while the interior remains gooey and pudding-like.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 minutes before serving. The dessert will thicken slightly as it cools.

Step 12

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for added indulgence.
