Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups Pizza sauce
  • 3 cups Rotini pasta
  • 2 cups Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 cup Pepperoni slices
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 tsp Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.25 cup Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with olive oil or non-stick cooking spray.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the rotini pasta and cook until al dente according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes or until softened.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Using a wooden spoon, break up the beef and cook until browned and fully cooked, about 7-9 minutes. Season with salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes (if using). Drain any excess grease.

Step 6

Stir the pizza sauce into the cooked ground beef mixture. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Step 7

Add the cooked rotini pasta to the skillet with the ground beef and sauce mixture. Toss until the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce.

Step 8

Spread half of the pasta mixture evenly into the prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top. Add half of the pepperoni slices.

Step 9

Layer the remaining pasta mixture over the top. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the second layer. Finish by topping with the remaining pepperoni slices.

Step 10

Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

Step 11

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are lightly browned.

Step 12

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired.

Step 13

Serve warm and enjoy your delicious ground beef pizza casserole!
