Prep Time:15 mins

Ingredients

  • 400 g extra-firm tofu
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 tbsp sriracha
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp neutral cooking oil (e.g., vegetable oil)
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, finely grated
  • 2 scallions, chopped
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels, then place a heavy object (such as a cast-iron skillet) on top. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2

Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes and transfer to a large bowl.

Step 3

Sprinkle the cubed tofu with cornstarch and toss gently until all pieces are evenly coated. This will help the tofu achieve a crisp exterior when cooked.

Step 4

In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, maple syrup, sriracha, and rice vinegar to create the sauce. Set aside.

Step 5

Heat a large nonstick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the cooking oil and swirl to coat the pan.

Step 6

Once the oil is hot, arrange the tofu cubes in a single layer in the skillet. Let the tofu cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes on one side until golden and crispy. Flip the cubes and repeat on all sides to ensure even browning. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.

Step 7

In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for 30-60 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.

Step 8

Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir to combine with the garlic and ginger. Let the sauce simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.

Step 9

Return the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss to coat each piece in the sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the tofu to absorb the flavors.

Step 10

Remove from heat and garnish with chopped scallions and sesame seeds (if using).

Step 11

Serve the spicy sweet and salty tofu over steamed rice or noodles for a complete and satisfying meal. Enjoy!
