Ingredients

  • 400 g firm tofu
  • 120 g cornstarch
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 500 ml vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 120 ml Asian plum sauce
  • 120 ml Thai peanut sauce
  • 2 green onions (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Drain the firm tofu and press it to remove excess moisture by placing it between two plates and weighing it down with a heavy object for 15 minutes.

Step 2

Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes or rectangles, depending on your preference.

Step 3

In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, salt, and black pepper to create a light coating mixture for the tofu.

Step 4

Toss the tofu cubes in the cornstarch mixture, ensuring each piece is evenly coated. Shake off any excess cornstarch before frying.

Step 5

Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or wok over medium-high heat until it reaches 180°C (350°F). Test the oil temperature by dropping a small piece of tofu in—if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

Step 6

Carefully add the tofu pieces to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 3-4 minutes per batch, flipping halfway, until the tofu is golden brown and crispy.

Step 7

Remove the fried tofu with a slotted spoon and transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 8

Serve the crispy fried tofu warm with small bowls of Asian plum sauce and Thai peanut sauce for dipping.

Step 9

Optional: Garnish the tofu with chopped green onions and sesame seeds before serving for added texture and flavor.
