Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 0.5 lb Ground pork
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup Milk
  • 1 Egg
  • 0.5 cup Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp Ground allspice
  • 0.25 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 0.5 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture.

Step 2

Roll the meat mixture into small, evenly-sized meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Set aside on a plate or tray.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, taking care not to overcrowd the pan. Brown the meatballs on all sides, about 5-7 minutes per batch. They do not need to be fully cooked through at this point. Remove the browned meatballs and set them aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes, until the mixture turns a golden brown color.

Step 5

Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Once smooth, stir in the heavy cream, soy sauce, and Dijon mustard. Let the gravy simmer for 2-3 minutes to thicken.

Step 6

Return the meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

Step 7

Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper, if necessary.

Step 8

Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired, and serve hot over noodles, mashed potatoes, or rice.
