Ingredients

  • 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup Shortening
  • 8 cups Powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar), sifted
  • 2 teaspoons Pure vanilla extract
  • 5 tablespoons Milk or heavy cream
  • 1 Pinch of salt
  • 0 to taste Food coloring (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and shortening together using a hand or stand mixer on medium speed. Beat until the mixture is smooth and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 2

Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, about one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Start the mixer on low speed to prevent sugar clouds, then increase to medium speed.

Step 3

Once all the powdered sugar is incorporated, add the vanilla extract, 3 tablespoons of milk or heavy cream, and the pinch of salt. Beat on medium speed until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Step 4

Check the consistency of the icing. If it is too thick, add the remaining milk or heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. For decorating purposes, the icing should hold stiff peaks but still be smooth enough to pipe easily.

Step 5

If using food coloring, divide the icing into separate bowls for each desired color. Add food coloring a drop at a time and mix well until the desired shade is reached.

Step 6

Transfer the icing to piping bags with decorating tips, or use a spatula to spread it onto cakes or cupcakes as needed.

Step 7

Store any leftover icing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Allow the icing to come to room temperature and rewhip if necessary before using.
