Heat 2 cups of water in a medium-sized saucepan until it starts to boil.
Once boiling, add the black tea bags to the water, reduce the heat to low, and let steep for 5-7 minutes.
While the tea is steeping, add baking soda to a heatproof pitcher. Baking soda helps to eliminate any bitterness from the tea.
Remove the tea bags after steeping, carefully squeezing out excess liquid into the saucepan, and discard the tea bags.
Pour the steeped tea into the pitcher over the baking soda, and stir in the granulated sugar until fully dissolved.
Add 6 cups of cold water to the pitcher to dilute the concentrated tea.
Chill the tea in the refrigerator for at least 1-2 hours, or until it is completely cold.
To serve, fill each glass with ice cubes, pour in the sweet iced tea, and garnish with a lemon slice or mint leaves if desired.
