Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 medium Onion, finely diced
  • 0.5 piece Green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 0.75 cup Ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Chili powder
  • 0.5 cup Water
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 4 pieces Hamburger buns

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess grease if necessary.

Step 3

Push the cooked ground beef to one side of the skillet. Add the finely diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the empty side. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.

Step 4

Mix the ground beef with the cooked vegetables in the skillet.

Step 5

Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and chili powder. Mix until fully combined.

Step 6

Add the water, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 8

Toast the hamburger buns lightly if desired.

Step 9

Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture generously onto the bottom half of each hamburger bun. Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately.
