Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 0.5 lb ground pork
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1.5 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 0.5 tsp salt (for sauce)
  • 16 oz spaghetti
  • 0 n/a water (for boiling pasta)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until combined.

Step 2

Shape the meat mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs and place them on a plate or tray.

Step 3

Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches and sear them until browned on all sides. Remove the meatballs and set them aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, sugar, and salt. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and add the browned meatballs back into the skillet.

Step 6

Cover the skillet partially with a lid and simmer for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are cooked through and the flavors have melded.

Step 7

While the meatballs are simmering, cook the spaghetti in a large pot of boiling salted water according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 8

Serve the meatballs and sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley, if desired.
