Ingredients

  • 750 grams beef chuck or stewing beef
  • 2 large onion
  • 2 medium red bell pepper
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1.5 tablespoons sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 500 milliliters beef stock
  • 150 milliliters heavy cream
  • 2 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons parsley (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Cut the beef into bite-sized cubes (approximately 3cm). Pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

Step 2

Peel and dice the onions. Dice the red bell peppers into medium-sized pieces. Mince the garlic cloves.

Step 3

Heat a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and butter.

Step 4

Once the butter has melted, sear the beef in batches. Make sure not to overcrowd the pot to allow proper browning. Set the seared beef aside on a plate.

Step 5

In the same pot, lower the heat to medium and add the diced onions. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened and translucent.

Step 6

Add the red bell peppers and cook for another 3 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 7

Sprinkle the sweet paprika, smoked paprika, and flour over the vegetable mixture. Stir well to coat the onions and peppers evenly.

Step 8

Add the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly to develop its flavor.

Step 9

Return the seared beef to the pot and pour in the beef stock. Add the bay leaves, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything well to combine.

Step 10

Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cover the pot with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Allow the goulash to cook gently for about 90 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 11

After 90 minutes, check the beef for tenderness. It should be fork-tender and easy to break apart.

Step 12

Stir in the heavy cream and let the goulash simmer for an additional 10 minutes uncovered to thicken the sauce slightly.

Step 13

Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt or pepper if needed. Remove the bay leaves.

Step 14

Serve the Danish Beef Goulash hot, garnished with freshly chopped parsley if desired. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread for a complete meal.
