Warm 250 ml of whole milk to about 37°C (98°F) and mix in 1 tsp of sugar and the active dry yeast (10 g). Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 500 g of all-purpose flour, 75 g of granulated sugar, and 1 tsp of salt.
Add the frothy yeast mixture, 75 g of softened butter, and the beaten egg to the dry ingredients. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. You can do this by hand or use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.
Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
While the dough is rising, prepare the vanilla custard. In a small saucepan, mix 50 g of vanilla custard powder, 50 g of powdered sugar, and 300 ml of whole milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the custard thickens. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tsp of vanilla extract. Let the custard cool completely.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 1 cm (0.4 inches). Cut out circles of dough using a 10 cm (4 inch) round cutter.
Place a small spoonful of the cooled custard in the center of each dough circle. Gather the edges of the circle together and pinch to seal, forming a bun. Place the buns seam-side down on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Cover the buns with a clean towel and let them rise again for 20-30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Brush the tops of the buns with a little milk or egg wash and sprinkle with pearl sugar if desired.
Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Allow the Dallaspulla to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea!
