Ingredients

  • 3 medium (about 400g total) Granny Smith apples
  • 150 g Dried currants
  • 150 g Raisins
  • 100 g Dried cranberries
  • 100 g Chopped dried apricots
  • 150 g Dark brown sugar
  • 1 orange Grated orange zest
  • 100 ml Freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 2 tbsp Freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp Ground cloves
  • 0.5 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp Mixed spice (or pumpkin pie spice)
  • 75 g Coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp Rum (optional, for added flavor)

Directions

Step 1

Peel, core, and finely chop the apples. You can also use a food processor for consistency, but avoid turning them into a puree.

Step 2

In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the chopped apples, currants, raisins, cranberries, apricots, and dark brown sugar.

Step 3

Add the grated orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and mixed spice. Stir everything together to ensure even distribution of the spices and juices.

Step 4

Heat the mixture gently, stirring regularly, until the sugar has dissolved and the fruits have begun to soften. This should take about 10 minutes.

Step 5

Add the coconut oil to the saucepan and stir until it has melted and thoroughly mixed into the mincemeat. Ensure the mixture has a glossy, cohesive texture.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for another 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. The fruits should become plump, and the mixture should be moist but not overly liquidy.

Step 7

If using, stir in the rum during the last 5 minutes of simmering for a festive flavor boost.

Step 8

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mincemeat to cool completely. The mixture will thicken slightly as it cools.

Step 9

Transfer the cooled mincemeat into sterilized jars, seal tightly, and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, the mincemeat can be frozen in airtight containers for up to 3 months.

Step 10

Use the dairy-free mincemeat to fill pies, tarts, or as a festive topping for desserts!
