Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup plant-based milk (such as almond, oat, or coconut milk)
  • 2 teaspoons or bags loose black tea leaves or tea bags
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger (grated or thinly sliced)
  • 3 pods green cardamom pods (slightly crushed)
  • 0.5 teaspoon or 1 stick ground cinnamon or cinnamon stick
  • 2 pieces cloves
  • 2 pieces black peppercorns (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon natural sweetener (such as maple syrup, coconut sugar, or agave syrup)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of water, grated ginger, crushed cardamom pods, cinnamon, cloves, and peppercorns (if using).

Step 2

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes to allow the spices to infuse into the water.

Step 3

Add the loose black tea leaves or tea bags to the saucepan and simmer for another 2 minutes. If you prefer stronger tea, let it steep longer.

Step 4

Lower the heat and pour in 1 cup of your chosen plant-based milk. Stir well and allow the mixture to heat up without boiling for 2-3 minutes.

Step 5

Add 1 tablespoon of your preferred natural sweetener and stir until dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste.

Step 6

Turn off the heat and strain the chai into cups using a fine mesh strainer to remove the tea leaves and spices.

Step 7

Serve immediately and enjoy your hot, flavorful dairy-free traditional Indian chai!
