Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon sea salt
  • 0.75 cup sugar
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon natural red food coloring (optional)
  • 0.25 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons almond milk

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan.

Step 2

In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and sea salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, unsweetened applesauce, coconut milk, distilled white vinegar, vanilla extract, apple cider vinegar, canola oil, and natural red food coloring if using.

Step 4

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter.

Step 5

Spoon the batter into a piping bag or a sealable plastic bag with the corner snipped off, and pipe it into the prepared donut pan, filling each well about three-quarters full.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until the donuts spring back when gently pressed. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 7

While the donuts are cooling, prepare the glaze by mixing the powdered sugar with the almond milk until smooth and desired consistency is achieved.

Step 8

Once the donuts are completely cooled, dip the top of each donut into the glaze and let the excess drip off. Allow glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
